Thinking about Invisalign but not sure what the process actually involves? You're not alone. Most people have a general idea — clear aligners, no metal brackets — but far fewer know what happens between that first appointment and the final result.
Here is the full picture, step by step.
What to Expect from Start to Finish
Invisalign treatment typically runs from six to eighteen months, depending on the complexity of your case. The number of aligner sets you receive, how well you wear them, and whether any refinements are needed all affect the overall timeline.
What stays consistent is the process. Every patient moves through the same stages — from consultation to retention — and knowing what each one involves helps you plan ahead and get the most from your treatment.
Your Consultation
Everything starts with a consultation with a Specialist Orthodontist.
At this appointment, your orthodontist will examine your teeth and bite, review your dental and medical history, and talk you through your options. This is your opportunity to ask questions, understand what treatment involves, and find out what results you can realistically expect.
If you have existing dental work such as crowns, bridges, or implants, this is also when your orthodontist will factor those into the plan.
Your 3D Scan and Treatment Plan
The next step is a digital scan of your teeth.
Rather than traditional impressions using putty, a handheld intraoral scanner captures a precise 3D image of your teeth and bite in a matter of minutes. The result is a highly accurate digital model that forms the foundation of your treatment plan.
Using that model, your Specialist Orthodontist maps out the full sequence of tooth movements — from where your teeth are now to where they need to be. You'll be able to see a simulation of how your teeth are expected to move at each stage, giving you a clear picture of the anticipated outcome before treatment begins.
This is also when we find out how many aligners you’ll need.
Your Aligners Are Made
Once your treatment plan is ready, it is sent to Align Technology, the company behind Invisalign, so your custom aligners can be made.
Each aligner in the series is precision-made to move specific teeth by a fraction of a millimetre. The full set is typically delivered within a few weeks, though delivery times can vary. Once your aligners arrive, you'll be called in to begin treatment.
You Start Wearing Your Aligners
At your fitting appointment, your Specialist Orthodontist will place small tooth-colored attachments on certain teeth. These are tiny dots of composite resin — the same material used in tooth-colored fillings — that help your aligners grip the teeth and move them more precisely.
Your first aligner is then fitted. Your orthodontist will check that it sits comfortably, show you how to insert and remove it, and walk you through the daily routine.
Aligners are worn for 20 to 22 hours a day — coming out for eating, drinking anything other than water, and cleaning, then going straight back in. Each aligner is worn for one to two weeks before you move to the next in the series.
Progress Appointments
Throughout your treatment, regular check-in appointments — typically every six to ten weeks — give your Specialist Orthodontist the chance to see how your teeth are progressing and keep everything on track.
These appointments are also when attachments may be adjusted, new sets of aligners are provided, and any questions are answered. Attending every scheduled appointment helps ensure your treatment stays on course and finishes on time.

Refinements
In many cases, a refinement phase follows the initial aligner series.
Once your first set of aligners is complete, your orthodontist will review the result and fine-tune any remaining movements with a new series of aligners. Refinements are a normal and well-anticipated part of the process — particularly for more involved cases — and are planned for from the outset.
Retention
The final step of Invisalign treatment is retention — and it's one of the most important. Once your teeth have reached their new positions, retainers keep them there while the surrounding bone and tissue settle. Wearing your retainer as directed is what protects the result you've worked toward. Your Specialist Orthodontist will advise on the right type for your case and how long they should be worn.

Frequently Asked Questions
Treatment length depends on the complexity of your case. Mild cases can be completed in as little as six months; more involved cases typically take twelve to eighteen months or longer. Your Specialist Orthodontist will give you a clearer estimate after your assessment and 3D scan.
Aligners need to be worn for 20 to 22 hours a day to move teeth as planned. Consistent under-wearing is one of the most common reasons treatment takes longer than expected or refinements are needed. Your progress appointments allow your orthodontist to identify and address this early.
