Braces and Aligners: Parents' Most Common Questions Answered

Every parent reaches this moment differently — a note home from the school dentist, a passing comment at a check-up, or your teen simply asking why their friend has clear trays instead of metal brackets. Wherever you're starting from, we're happy to walk you through what parents most often want to know.

When Should My Child See an Orthodontist

Earlier than most parents expect. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first orthodontic check-up no later than age 7, while a mix of baby and permanent teeth is still present.

An early visit does not mean early braces. In many cases, the Specialist Orthodontist simply monitors growth and recommends treatment only if and when it would genuinely help.

What Is the Difference Between Braces and Aligners

Braces use small brackets and wires fixed to the teeth, working continuously until they are removed. Clear aligners are transparent, removable trays that are changed every week or two as teeth gradually move.

Both can correct crowding, spacing, and bite problems. The right choice depends on the complexity of the case, your child's age, and their day-to-day habits.

Are Aligners as Effective as Braces for Teens

For many teens, yes. Systems such as Invisalign Teen are designed for growing mouths and include wear indicators that show whether the aligners are being worn enough. For younger children with developing bites, Invisalign First offers a similar approach at an earlier stage.

The honest caveat: aligners only work while they are in the mouth — most of the day, removed only for meals and brushing. If your teen is unlikely to keep that up, fixed braces may give a more predictable result.

How Often Does My Child Need to See the Orthodontist for Adjustment

Roughly every 4 to 8 weeks. At these visits, your Specialist Orthodontist tightens or replaces the archwire on braces, or hands over the next set of trays for aligners, and checks that treatment is progressing as planned.

Between visits, if a bracket comes loose or an aligner is lost or damaged, contact the clinic right away rather than waiting for the next appointment — delays can slow the overall treatment timeline.

      Does Orthodontic Treatment Hurt

There is usually some pressure for a few days after braces are adjusted or a new aligner is fitted. Most children describe it as soreness rather than pain, and it settles quickly. Soft foods help, and your dentist will advise if anything more is needed.

How Long Does Orthodontic Treatment Take

It depends on the complexity of the case — many children and teens complete treatment within one to three years. Your Specialist Orthodontist will give you a realistic estimate at the first consultation.

Keeping appointments and maintaining good oral hygiene throughout treatment helps avoid delays.
