My 7-year-old hasn't lost any teeth — should I be concerned?

As parents, we all tend to keep a close eye on our children’s milestones — and losing baby teeth is one of the big ones. It usually marks the start of their adult teeth coming in and signals a new stage in their oral development.

So if your 7-year-old still has all their baby teeth, it’s completely understandable to wonder: is this something to worry about?

At Drs. Nicolas & Asp Centers, we know how much you care about your child’s health — and that includes their smile. Here’s a look at what’s typical when it comes to baby tooth loss, and when it might be a good idea to check in with a dentist.

The Usual Timeline for Baby Tooth Loss

Generally, children start losing their baby teeth around the age of 6, with the process continuing until around age 12 or 13. The order in which they fall out usually mirrors the order in which they erupted. This typically means the lower central incisors (the two front bottom teeth) are the first to go, followed by the upper central incisors.

By the age of 7, many children will have lost at least a few of their front baby teeth. By the time they’re 12 or 13, most will have lost all their baby teeth and have a full set of permanent teeth. In total, there are 32 permanent teeth — 12 more than the original 20 baby teeth.

However, it's important to remember that every child develops at their own pace. There is a range of what is considered normal.
