Exposure of Unerupted Teeth in Children

Exposure of Unerupted Teeth in Children

      Prevent teeth misalignment or crowding.

Has your child’s permanent tooth not come in as expected?

At Drs. Nicolas & Asp Centers, we understand that delayed tooth eruption can cause concern for parents and may affect your child’s smile development. Our gentle, specialized approach helps guide unerupted or impacted teeth into their proper position safely and effectively.

Exposure of Unerupted Teeth in Children
      WHAT IS

      Exposure of Unerupted Teeth

Exposure of unerupted teeth is a pediatric dental procedure used to help permanent teeth that haven’t erupted naturally. These teeth may be stuck beneath the gums due to crowding, lack of space, or abnormal positioning. By carefully exposing the tooth, our specialists make it possible for it to erupt correctly or be guided with orthodontic treatment.

      Why It’s Sometimes Necessary

      Exposure may be recommended to:

      • Help permanent teeth erupt in the correct position
      • Correct impacted or delayed teeth that could affect the smile or bite
      • Prevent misalignment or crowding

The Procedure at Drs. Nicolas & Asp Centers

      Specialist Consultation & Imaging

One of our Specialist Pediatric Dentists will evaluate your child’s teeth using digital X-rays and scans to plan the safest approach.

      Gentle Exposure

The area is numbed for comfort, and the gum tissue over the unerupted tooth is carefully opened to reveal the tooth. If needed, a small attachment may be placed to guide the tooth’s eruption.

      Follow-Up & Orthodontic Guidance

We monitor your child’s progress and coordinate with orthodontic care if necessary, ensuring the tooth moves into the correct position comfortably.

      Aftercare Instructions

      Following Exposure

Your Specialist Pediatric Dentist will provide you with a comprehensive set of recovery instructions after your child’s surgery. It is very important to follow these closely to ensure proper healing and comfort. Here are some general care guidelines:

      Oral hygiene

Avoid brushing the exposed tooth on the day of the procedure. Resume gentle brushing in the area the next day. Brush all other teeth normally. Normal brushing in the surgical area usually resumes after 2 weeks.

      Salt water rinses

As directed by the dentist, rinse with ½ teaspoon of salt in a small cup of lukewarm water for the first 2 weeks.

      Diet

Stick to soft foods for the first few days. Avoid very tough, chewy, or hard foods, and chew on the opposite side of the mouth from the surgical site.

      Activity

Avoid heavy exercise for a few days to reduce the risk of bleeding or delayed healing.

      Pain management

Some pain, swelling, or temporary numbness is expected. Panadol or Nurofen may be used for pain relief. Continue any prescribed medications until complete.

      Packing material

If surgical packing has been placed, do not disturb it. If it falls off, please contact us immediately to have it replaced.

      Follow-up

Review appointments are typically scheduled every 3–6 months. If your child experiences discomfort from the packing material, contact us for adjustment or polishing.

Complications from this procedure are very rare when instructions are followed. Taking every step to support healing will ensure your child’s comfort and recovery.
