Single-Phase vs Multi-Phase Orthodontic Treatment

Introduction: Braces Now vs Later
Is now the right time to start braces, or should you wait a little longer?
The answer isn’t always straightforward — because every smile is unique. Orthodontic treatment can begin at different stages depending on your child’s dental development, bite, and overall oral health. At Drs. Nicolas & Asp Centers, we take a personalized approach to determine the best time to begin treatment.
Today, we’ll walk you through the two main orthodontic treatment pathways: single-phase and multi-phase.
Two Main Orthodontic Approaches
Single-Phase Treatment
Single-phase treatment typically begins in the early to mid-teen years, once most permanent teeth have erupted (or during the late mixed dentition stage). This approach is comprehensive — using braces or clear aligners to straighten teeth and correct the bite in one stage, usually lasting 12 to 24 months.
Best suited for:
- Crooked or spaced teeth
- Mild to moderate bite issues (malocclusions)
Multi-Phase Treatment
Multi-phase treatment can start much earlier — sometimes as young as 7 to 11 years old. The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends that children have their first orthodontic evaluation by age 7, as this is when developing bite and jaw issues can be detected early.
Phase One focuses on guiding jaw growth, correcting crossbites, reducing severe crowding, and addressing habits such as: thumb-sucking or lip-sucking, nail-biting, mouthbreathing, and tongue thrusting.
After a resting period, Phase Two begins once all permanent teeth have come in, completing alignment and bite correction.
Best suited for:
- Developmental jaw issues
- Severe crowding or spacing
- Crossbites
- Early loss of baby teeth
- Persistent oral habits affecting bite
Which Approach Is Right for Your Child?
There’s no universal answer — it depends on the child’s growth pattern, dental development, and specific orthodontic needs. The best way to know is through an orthodontic assessment with a specialist who can evaluate the jaw, bite, and teeth position using both clinical examination and imaging.
Why Timing Matters in Orthodontics
Starting treatment too early or too late can affect results and treatment duration.
An experienced orthodontist can balance these factors to create the most effective treatment plan. Getting the timing right means fewer surprises and better long-term results.
