Forty years ago, a small group of patients received dental implants to replace missing teeth. Researchers recently checked in on them — and what they found is extraordinary news for anyone considering this treatment.
If you've ever wondered whether a dental implant is truly worth the investment, a landmark study from the University of Gothenburg in Sweden just provided one of the most powerful answers in the history of dentistry. Published in the journal Clinical Implant Dentistry and Related Research, the study followed patients who received single-tooth implants between 1982 and 1985 — over forty years ago.
The conclusion? All of the implants examined were still in place and fully functional.

So, How Does a Dental Implant Actually Work?
Think of a dental implant as an artificial tooth root. A small titanium post is placed into your jawbone during a surgical procedure. Over the following weeks and months, your bone actually grows around and bonds to this post — a process called osseointegration. Once that bond is secure, a custom-made crown (the visible, tooth-shaped part) is attached on top. The result is a replacement tooth that looks, feels, and functions like a natural one. You can eat, speak, and smile with full confidence. And as this remarkable study shows, if placed correctly and cared for properly, the implant itself can last for decades — potentially a lifetime.
"It is impressive that the single implants function so well after such a long time. The results show that the implants remain in place and that the bone loss around them is virtually unchanged after forty years."
— Sargon Barkarmo, Prosthodontist & Senior Lecturer, University of Gothenburg
What About the Crown on Top?
The study found that the crowns placed on top had a shorter lifespan, with only about 60% of original crowns still in place at the forty-year mark. But here's the important detail: most of those crowns were replaced for aesthetic reasons, not because something went wrong medically.
In other words, patients updated their crowns because they wanted a fresher look — the same way you might redecorate a room in a house with a solid foundation. The underlying implant remained solid and stable. And as crown materials continue to improve, future replacements may be needed even less frequently.
Why Technique and Healing Time Still Matter
One of the most important takeaways from this study is the role of careful surgical planning and sufficient healing time. The study concludes that implants placed using well-planned surgical techniques and allowed adequate time to heal have an excellent long-term prognosis. It's also worth noting that the older implant systems used in this study — which proved so remarkably effective — are no longer available on the market, having been replaced by newer systems before their long-term track record could be fully established.
What This Means For You As A Patient
What This Means For You As A Patient
At Drs. Nicolas & Asp Centers, we have always believed that dental implants represent one of the most transformative options available for replacing missing teeth. This research reinforces exactly why.
When you choose an implant, you're not choosing a temporary fix. You're making a long-term investment in your oral health, your comfort, and your quality of life. Done well, a high quality implant can serve you for decades — something no other tooth-replacement option can promise with the same level of scientific backing.
Our team follows carefully planned surgical protocols and ensures that every patient has the time and support needed for proper healing. Because the best result isn't the fastest one — it's the one that lasts.
