Can You Put Veneers Over Decayed Teeth?

Many patients come to Drs. Nicolas & Asp Centers hoping to enhance their smile with veneers—and for good reason. Porcelain veneers can dramatically improve the appearance of your teeth, they’re resistant to stains, and they last for many years. But one question we often get is: "Are veneers an option if my teeth are decayed or damaged?" It’s a valid concern, and we’re here to clear up the confusion.

The simple answer is no, you cannot place veneers over decayed teeth.

While dental veneers are incredibly effective at transforming the appearance of your smile, they are a cosmetic enhancement designed to be placed on a healthy, stable foundation.

Here’s why treating decay beforehand is absolutely essential:

Why Decay Must Be Addressed First

Veneers are a "cover," not a "cure"

A veneer is a thin, custom-made porcelain shell bonded to the front surface of your tooth. It's designed to correct issues like discoloration, minor chips, gaps, or slight misalignment. It is not a restorative treatment for active dental problems such as tooth decay or gum disease.

      Decay worsens underneath

If a veneer is placed over a decayed tooth, the decay will continue to progress undisturbed beneath the veneer. You might not even notice it until the problem becomes severe, leading to:

      • increased pain and sensitivity
      • wider tooth damage and structural weakening
      • infection, potentially requiring root canal treatment or even tooth extraction

      Compromised bonding

For a veneer to bond securely and last, the tooth's surface must be clean, dry, and healthy. Decay compromises the integrity of the tooth structure, making it impossible to achieve a strong and lasting bond. The veneer would be prone to falling off, cracking, or failing prematurely.

      Maintaining oral health

Our primary goal at Drs. Nicolas & Asp Centers is your long-term oral health. Covering up a problem like decay goes against the principles of good dentistry and would ultimately lead to more significant issues down the line.

The Ethical Approach: Health First, Aesthetics Second
