      What Is Gum Depigmentation

Gum depigmentation — also called gum bleaching or gum lightening — is a cosmetic periodontal procedure that removes excess pigmentation from the gum tissue, creating a more uniform, pink appearance along the gumline.

Healthy gums naturally vary in color. For some patients, higher concentrations of melanin cause the gums to appear brown, dark pink, or patchy. This is completely harmless — but for patients who feel self-conscious about the color of their gums when they smile, depigmentation offers a lasting solution.

The procedure is performed by a Specialist Periodontist using a dental laser, which gently removes the outermost layer of pigmented tissue. The result is a noticeably more even gumline that complements cosmetic dental work or simply improves the overall appearance of a smile.

      What Causes Dark Gums

Gum color is primarily determined by the amount of melanin — the same pigment responsible for skin tone — deposited in the gum tissue. Several factors influence how much melanin is present:

In the majority of patients seen at Drs. Nicolas & Asp Centers, dark gums are simply a natural, harmless expression of melanin distribution — not a sign of disease.

      Who Is a Good Candidate

Gum depigmentation is suitable for patients who:

Your Specialist Periodontist will assess your gum health at a consultation before recommending treatment. If any signs of gum disease are present, these will need to be addressed first.

      How the Procedure Works

Gum depigmentation at Drs. Nicolas & Asp Centers is performed using a dental laser. The laser energy is precisely directed at the pigmented areas of the gum surface, vaporizing the melanin-containing cells in the outer epithelial layer.

As the tissue heals, new gum cells regenerate without the same concentration of melanin — producing a lighter, more consistent color.

The laser approach offers several advantages over older techniques:

The procedure is typically completed in a single session.

      What to Expect During Treatment

A local anesthetic is applied to ensure the area is completely numb before treatment begins. Most patients experience little to no discomfort during the procedure itself.

Depending on the extent of pigmentation and the areas being treated, the session usually takes between 45 and 90 minutes.

After treatment, the treated gum tissue will initially appear white or grey as it begins to heal. This is a normal part of the healing process. Within one to two weeks, the tissue transitions to a healthy pink color as new cells regenerate.

      Aftercare and Recovery

Recovery from laser gum depigmentation is generally straightforward. Most patients return to normal daily activities the same day or the following day.

In the days immediately after treatment:

Mild tenderness and sensitivity are expected for a few days. Your periodontist will provide specific aftercare instructions and schedule a follow-up to monitor healing.

      A note on repigmentation

In some patients — particularly those who smoke or have very high natural melanin levels — pigmentation can gradually return over time. This is not a complication; it is a normal biological response. If repigmentation occurs, the procedure can be repeated.

      Gum Depigmentation FAQs

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, so patients do not feel pain during treatment. Some tenderness and mild sensitivity in the days following treatment is normal and typically resolves within a week.

Results vary between patients. In many cases, the improvement is long-lasting. However, melanin-producing cells can reactivate over time — particularly in patients who smoke — causing gradual repigmentation. If this occurs, the procedure can be repeated.

No. Gum depigmentation is a cosmetic procedure only and does not treat gum disease. If you have signs of gum disease — such as bleeding, swelling, or recession — your periodontist will address this before any cosmetic treatment is considered.

In most cases, gum depigmentation is completed in a single session. Your Specialist Periodontist will advise during your consultation whether one session is sufficient based on the extent and distribution of pigmentation.
