Broken or Damaged Tooth Extraction in Dubai

      Broken or Damaged Tooth Extraction

Safe, surgical-grade removal when a tooth can't be saved.

With precision, comfort, and a clear path to restoring your smile.

A broken or severely damaged tooth can happen suddenly — from an accident, a bite on something hard, or decay that has gone untreated for too long. In many cases, a tooth can still be saved with a filling, crown, or root canal. But when the damage is too extensive, safe removal is the best way to protect your oral health and prevent further complications.

At Drs. Nicolas & Asp Centers, broken and damaged tooth extractions are carried out by experienced dentists and, where needed, Specialist Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons — using digital imaging to plan every extraction with precision and care.

What Is a Broken or Damaged Tooth Extraction

A broken or damaged tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth that has fractured, cracked, or decayed beyond the point where it can be repaired or restored. Unlike a routine extraction, these cases often involve a tooth that has already lost significant structure — meaning your dentist first needs to assess how much of the tooth remains, whether the roots are affected, and whether extraction is truly the last option.

Not every broken tooth needs to come out. Many chips and fractures can be treated with a dental filling, a crown, or root canal treatment if enough healthy tooth structure remains. Extraction becomes necessary only when the damage is too severe, the tooth is unstable, or infection has compromised the surrounding bone and gum tissue.

Common Causes of Broken or Damaged Teeth

Teeth can break or become damaged for several reasons, often building up over time before a sudden fracture occurs.

      When Is Extraction Necessary

      When Is Extraction Necessary

Extraction is only recommended when a tooth cannot realistically be saved. Common signs that removal may be needed include:

Your dentist will always assess whether a less invasive option — a filling, crown, or root canal — can save the tooth before recommending extraction.

      The Extraction Procedure

      at Drs. Nicolas & Asp

Every broken or damaged tooth extraction follows a careful, structured process to keep you comfortable and protect the surrounding teeth and bone.

      Assessment & Digital X-Ray

Your dentist examines the tooth and takes a digital X-ray to see the full extent of the damage, including the roots and surrounding bone, before deciding on the safest approach.

      Anesthesia & Removal

The area is fully numbed with local anesthesia. Depending on how much of the tooth remains, the extraction may be straightforward or may require a small surgical approach if the tooth has broken below the gumline.

      Aftercare & Next Steps

Once the tooth is removed, you'll receive clear aftercare instructions. If you're considering a replacement option, your dentist can discuss this with you at the same visit or at a follow-up appointment.

      Recovery After Broken Tooth Extraction

Most patients recover comfortably within a week, though healing time can vary depending on how the tooth was removed.

      Day 1-2: Initial Healing

A blood clot forms at the extraction site. Mild swelling and discomfort are normal. Rest and a cold compress can help manage this.

      Day 3-5: Settling Down

Swelling and discomfort gradually ease. A soft diet is recommended during this period.

      Week 1: Back to Normal

Most patients resume regular activities and diet within about a week, once the gum tissue has closed over the site.

If the tooth had broken below the gumline and required a surgical approach, healing may take a little longer — closer to two to three weeks.

Bite on gauze as directed to support clot formation in the first hour

Avoid smoking and using straws — the suction can dislodge the healing clot and lead to dry socket

Stick to soft foods for the first few days

Take any prescribed medication as directed

Avoid disturbing the site when brushing, and rinse gently with salt water after 24 hours

      Your Questions, Answered.

Not always. If enough healthy structure remains, a filling, crown, or root canal treatment can often save the tooth. But if the fracture extends into the root or below the gumline, or if decay has destroyed too much of the tooth, extraction may be the safest option.

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, so you shouldn't feel pain during removal. Some soreness and swelling are normal for a few days afterward and are typically well managed with prescribed or over-the-counter medication.

An untreated broken tooth can lead to worsening pain, infection, and damage to the surrounding gum and bone. Sharp edges can also injure your tongue or cheek. It's best to have any broken tooth assessed as soon as possible.

Most extractions take around 20 to 45 minutes, depending on how much of the tooth remains and whether a surgical approach is needed.

Once healing is complete, a dental implant, bridge, or other restoration can replace the missing tooth. Your dentist will help you choose the option that best fits your needs and budget.

Many Dubai insurance plans cover tooth extraction. Call us at 04 394 7777 and we will be more than happy to check your coverage for you. For more information, visit our Insurance & Payment Options page.
