What is Melanoma and How to treat it!
March 9, 2020 5:44 amMelanoma is a type of skin cancer which can arise from normal skin cells. However, it mostly grows from moles. Similar to most cancers, it can spread to several organs such as bones and nervous tissues.
It is believed that Melanoma can grow from a combination of factors which include; genetic inheritance, sun and tanning beds exposure.
- Sunburn
- Fair skin
- Excessive sun or tanning lights exposure
- Living in sunny areas
- Family history
- Diseases that cause immunodeficiency
- Having several moles or congenital (born with it) moles or large moles
What are the signs & symptoms?
Since Melanoma could originate from a well-behaved mole, dermatologists have developed a simple strategy called the ABCDE of Melanoma to determine if the mole needs to be checked out. It is diagnosed as follows; “A” is for asymmetry, “B” is for borders, “C” is for colour, “D” is for diameter and “E” is for evolution.
How to treat it?
- Mole Screening: full body skin examination
- Dermoscopy and bank of images on suspicious lesions
- Surgical removal and surgical expansion
- Dermatologist follows up by the standards guidelines
