What is a pulpectomy?
June 19, 2021 12:16 pmNeglecting dental health can have a lot of negative consequences, in both the short and long term. A pulpectomy is a dental procedure affecting the tooth pulp, that is sometimes needed in bad cases of decay or tooth damage, particularly for children.
What is the pulp?
The pulp is the soft inside material of a tooth, containing the tooth nerve and blood vessels.
What is a pulpectomy?
A pulpectomy is a procedure to remove the pulp from the tooth crown and the tooth roots. For children, the area is then filled in afterward with other material, which will eventually be reabsorbed into the body when the adult teeth come through.
When is a pulpectomy necessary?
This procedure is usually performed on baby teeth when they are badly infected, or badly damaged. The process helps try and save the tooth from having to be removed. Keeping the tooth in place is really important in helping with your child’s eating and speaking, as well as helping adult teeth grow in the right places later on. If a decayed or damaged tooth is left untreated instead of being dealt with or removed, this can cause continued pain for your child. For an adult, a pulpectomy is the first part of a root canal.
Pulpotomy and pulpectomy
In some cases, only a partial pulpectomy, called a pulpotomy, may be enough. This is where the pulp is only removed from the damaged upper part of the tooth, instead of all of it. The roots will not be affected.
How to avoid it
It’s highly important to take the best care of your child’s teeth, even when it’s the baby set that will be lost later. A good dental hygiene routine is a good way to keep them in good condition. You should also visit the dentist every six months for a check-up. This will help set your child up for great dental health later when they have an adult set of teeth to look after.
