Save your gums…

Data from current research have demonstrated significantly higher number of adults suffering from periodontal (gum) disease than originally estimated. Periodontitis ( Gum Disease) is a destructive bacterial infection of the gums, where symptoms may not appear until an advanced stage of the disease.

Warning signs of Periodontitis can include: red and swollen gums, bleeding while brushing, gums that are receding or pulling away from the teeth causing teeth to look longer than before, loose or separating teeth and persistent bad breath. As the disease progresses more gum tissues and bones are destroyed and eventually teeth have to be removed completely. Data from these findings support the need for a yearly check-up to all patients for a comprehensive periodontal evaluation.

To really know if you have periodontal disease, your local Periodontist must examine thoroughly your medical history and risk factors (age, genetics, smoking, diabetes, oral hygiene), take necessary dental X-Rays, and examine each tooth above and below the gum line. A visual examination alone, even by the most qualified dentist is not enough. Luckily, periodontal disease can be preventable if diagnosed early.
