Acne Vulgaris is a common skin complaint. The majority of teenagers will experience this problem at some stage. However, by the age of 25 most cases will have resolved on their own whether or not they have obtained treatment.

The condition is an embarrassing complaint for many. It can link with issues in self-confidence, which is an important consideration when considering young adults whose bodies are changing during adolescence. In the small minority with severe forms of the condition, permanent scarring might occur if the condition is untreated. Other than -or these considerations, it is not a life threatening condition.

The diagnosis can however be tricky to make after the age 25. A patient should attend their doctor if it persists into adulthood primarily to distinguish it from Acne Rosacea; a different condition that can affect the eyes as well as skin. The cause of Acne Vulgaris is associated with the surge in the levels of hormone Testosterone that occurs in adolescence. It affects both sexes. An inflammatory reaction linked to Testosterone occurs in hair follicles' sebaceous glands. The affected glands ore abundant to the-face. Acne sufferers can also get the lesions at other sites, most especially the chest. Please note that although antibiotics are with good effect to treat Acne, the condition is not primarily a simple infection but instead a complex inflammation with only a small component of infection.

To help you understand which treatment is suitable for you, we can categorise Acne according to its severity:

  • Mild forms of the condition will include blackheads and red scaly markings.
  • Moderate forms of the disease include pustules (spots with pus in them).
  • Severe forms of the condition which also includes nodules (hard lumps); these may have pus in them at some stage, and at other stages become cystic (very soft large lumps). which are filled with fluid. The severe types can lead to scarring. Scars are permanent.

Starting the treatment early will prevent progression to the severe types and scarring. Treatments for mild to moderate acne may include I k formulated washes, creams, gels, antibiotics gel. For more severe acne, antibiotic tablets and Isotretinoin might be recommended. However, Physicians must carefully weigh the benefits of this treatment against the possible side effects, which can be severe. This is why we advise that you to start Acne treatment early with the other mild therapies to prevent progression into the severe forms of the condition.
